You have heard it before. The first time I heard it was when I bought my first new bike, back in the day! "You need to take it easy cornering for the first 100 miles, until you have the tires broke in."
I know someone who picked up his new bike on a Saturday and on the way home ran into a rain storm and wrecked the bike on a curve. New tires, wet surface!
2000 miles ago I installed a new Dunlop Elite III on the rear of my bike. I do recall a little feeling of the rear tire slipping on curves before getting it scuffed in. Last night I installed a New Elite III of the front. after completing the work I went out for a test ride. in turning from my drive onto the road, I nearly dumped the bike due to the front tire slidding out from under the bike.
Whatever the release agent is, that Dunlop uses on these tires, it is damn slippery stuff. I now know to be very careful even on dry pavement until I have these scuffed in.
It is important to say "Take it easy for the first 100 miles, until you have the tires scuffed in."

Thanks for the warning. I'm about to put new tires on mine.
I haven't decided which brand yet. I'm looking at staying with Dunlop or put on Metzler.

Has anyone ever tried to manually scuff the tires? I.E. hit 'em with some 80 grit sandpaper??

I've been changing my own tires lately because the last indy I took the bike to charged more for labor than the tire. I run wide white walls on the roadking and they come with that blue crap on the side wall as well as the release agent. Before I mounted the tire, I scrubbed the whole tire with scotchbrite and a heavy duty detergent similar to Simple Orange.
I didn't feel any squirreliness in the back end on the first ride. I actually got on it pretty hard from a light to see if it would spin. It did break just a bit, but not as much as the tire I replaced.
Moral: The release agent washes off.
Ernie do you balance your own also or have you just had good lining up the dot with the valve stem? They charged me 45 bucks a couple of weeks ago to mount and balance a back tire the most they had ever charged me before was 16 just curious if you don't balance them how good they ran?

been a while... but I just lined up the yellow dot with the valve stem. I've had it up a bit over 100 on this tire and I can't detect any vibration or wander from it.
I started letting a shop swap tires for me years back after I had pinched 2 tubes trying to mount a tire on my spoked rim.
Last time I replaced the rear, they charged me $310 for a $150 tire. I said screw it no tube to pinch, I'll do it myself. I found a local indy with Bumlop WWW's for $119.95, hooked it over the back rest and went home and mounted it. It took me a little over an hour to pull the mufflers, drop the wheel r&r the tire and get everything back together. I'll do it for $184/tire all day long.

Well I was wondering if anyone could hook me up with some advice on how to put a twenty year old off-road tire off a rim.
Somebody block this idiot
