Kd5cqt, how do you feel about me sharing the HF bands with you in a month? Actually I'm sad to see the morse code requirement dropped - at least for the Extra class license. I've recently started studying code again with my 12-year-old and then the FCC drops the requirement.

Oh well, it won't keep me from using it.

I have mixed feelings about the code. It certainly won't allow the riff-raff to get onto HF...they're already there. I have been in those rare situations where CW was all that was making it, and the day will come when people will open their eyes and see that. For many years, ham radio was being supplanted by computers and cell phones. Katrina did a lot to swing the pendulm back the other way since we were the ONLY ONES able to talk after the storm. This was coming for a long time, and I have no complaints other than it didn't seem to matter what those of us who have licenses had to say about it. Now, we shall see what we shall see about the results. Keep up the practie. I am positive that you will find an opportunity or need to use it.

Sad to see it go away.

I remember how hard I worked learning the code and the feeling of the accomplishment after I got my ticket in the beginning.

Made the 13 wpm but now I am so rusty It would be hard for the 5 wpm.

Maybe get the old key out and have some practice now.

Mike, I'm available anytime you can get that antenna back up and want to practice code. I may could jack it back up to 5.

Translation:

But I cheated and used a website to translate.

I've been wanting to go and get my license for several year but time and money have held me back.

Those translator sites are ok, but I built a box to slow down the burners who like to hit the key at 30+ (some as high as 60---old time military radio ops, I guess). The problem came sending back to them. I get fumble-fingered above about 25. As of last night, CW is still going strong on the airwaves. I don't think it is going to disappear anytime soon.

I don't think so either. I just hope us HF newbies will pick up cw as well. I like the mode - it just frustrates me sometimes.

I really hate the feeling that I got something for nothing - but, it's not my fault the test was dropped even though some of the posters on QRZ.com infer that it was. My goal was to pass the code test before it was dropped. Now I only have about a month and I don't see it happening in that timeframe. I am a good operator - I've just been a good operator above 50 mhz (mostly 6 meters) and I know I will be a good operator on HF as well.

If you and Mike do plan a sked, post the time and freq here I would llike to listen in.

I need to get a 6 meter antenna back up on the tower sometime. Don't feel like you need to wait on Rimmer to get that antenna up. Assuming you will be a Tech with HF privileges, we can hit 40 or 80 CW unless they change all of that, too. 10 meters phone is a bity iffy right now although I have managed a few QSO's on that band when there were zero spots on the sun.
BTW, don't feel bad about missing out on a chance to prove yourself. I did 20 wpm for Extra about a year before they dropped the code requirement to 5 wpm. I had already passed 13 and was holding an Advanced ticket then. It is a bit satisfying to be able to give some of the really oild timers some hell when they get on my case for being in their territory with a KD5 call when truth is, many of them caouldn't send or receive 5 themselves these days. I usually rip them with "BITE ME" at around 60 wpm on the keyer.
Get your General and give me a time and frequency and I'll be there. If ya already got the ticket, time and freq anytime...

Since we moved I have nothing up but making some plans.

KD5CQT is ready to go and it may take me a bit to get sorted out here.

Yeah, but after he gets it, he'll see how sweet it is and start dreaming about how sweeter the Ultra is and so forth. I couldn't stand the wait so I dove in and haven't looked back.

Funny story when I was looking for my 1st Harley about 6 years ago.

Went down to the local dealer, and inquired about a Road Glide. He says, "They're not very popular, and we can't get much for them, so we don't order any".

I leave and check a few more places and go back a week or so later. I see the same salesman, but he doesn't remember me. I tell him I really, really want a Road Glide, and he says, "Well, you see that model is very rare, they just don't make many of them. And because they are so rare, they go for much more than any of Harley's other models. I can put you on a list, but you have to put up some money up front and wait".

I promptly left, and bought my first R/G on eBay...:123:
