View Full Version : How do I ride thee?

Lets all count the ways.
We all like a little adrenaline rush now & then or we wouldn’t throw a leg over.
I’m not asking why do you ride. I’m asking what things do you do along the way for extra pleasure?
I’ll start this off with a few things I like to do
My idea of fun on a bike goes something like this
1 Gassing it through the turns.
2 Spinning the rear without using the break. This is easy if you just start out in gravel, leaves, dirt, road paint or whatever you can find loose and/or slippery, just get a handful and try going through the gears. this would probably be my first choice but it’s far less socially acceptable, even though it’s really a blast?
3 Standing up, yeah I know but it’s fun. Standing up going through the twistys is a trip. Your body feels like an inverted pendulum and you can see over the cliff way too good. Ya got to take it easy and go through them at regular car speed but it’s ok. Sometimes I’ll go a couple of miles that way. My levers aren’t adjusted for standing so I’m pretty vulnerable doing it but as I said it’s fun.
4 Straight line speed is not my thing, but now and then I forget? Anything over 120pmh seems ludicrous to me but maybe that’s just sour grapes?
Not asking for the top ten, one or two would do just fine. :action-smiley-083:

I used to do some of those things, but the doctor changed my medication.
Now I am into riding to mini-meets and meeting new people, unless Leadbelly is along. Then I am into nailing curves and high speeds. Sometimes we have to stop for a cold beverage and wait for the posse to catch up.

Hay I hardly ever do that stuff any more. Fact is I’m workin’ on doin’ less and less more often. Ever chance I get I try to do it less. <bg>

When I can remember to take it easy I do and I’m getting better at it. Thing is I was raised on the idea that “If enough is enough, then too much is better” and that’s the point I start at everyday. (lmao)
My chicken strips are still pretty thin and I usually stand up through the twisties during the evening commute but I do far less burn outs now. So I’m getting better right?

Well I love speed, :awesome: So I can't wait to get the sporty back together again!
Then on the dresser I love slow precision riding on our drill team. Scrapping the frame rails in either locked out turns rt. or lt. :action-smiley-083: Doing so with as many as 8 others within hand touching range. We ride so close that you can throw a blanket over us. I also love mountain road riding in say either the Black Hills or the Smokies is a blast.

Twisties are my favorite, going a little faster and having to lean a little harder is a rush for me!!

I've actually been working on the same thing.
I took a course through work that was two days long, and taught us the basics of slow cone patterns. Lately, I've been taking both of my bikes to the local school parking lot, and setting up my own cone patterns (styrofoam cups). I worked on the keyhole this weekend, until I could negotiate it both ways...
Now, that is fun...

Great, making the key hole what dia.? We use 18' and get three ultras inside at once.
Hope you'll find it as fun as I do and locate a near by team to see about joining!

I used four parking spaces to set it up. When I paced it off, it was 19' with a 3' entry gate. Looked something like this:
____________@__________ __
!
!
!
*______________________* 19 feet
!
!
!
_________*____*_________ ___
...............!...3'...!
!.................19'.....................!
Not sure if my boots were actually a foot long, so it may have been more or less that exactly 19'. Just used the lines as a guide, as the pattern was a perfect square, when I paced it off. I sent an email to one of our motor instructors and asked for dimensions on all the cone patterns they use, so I can set them up correctly, and practice the right way.
Unfortunately, I think the only competition team we have would require me transferring to motors. I am putting some serious thought into it, but not sure I want to make the leap right now...
I admire guys like you that have the skills to squeeze 3 baggers into the same pattern! It's just friggin awesome to watch!
When I saw some of the patterns that these guys do, I thought they were pulling our collective legs. Then the instructor jumped on a cold bike, and did the "snowman" without warming up. Parked the bike, and said "In three weeks, I can teach you can do that....
Great recruiting tool!!!
Edit: Couldn't get it to post the diagram the way I wanted it. If you move the ! to the @ cone, you get the idea of the parking spaces...

I get it and our team capt. is a Lt. motor cop instructor for Orange Co. Fl. for over 18 years and can do the whole cone set up side saddle.
I can do most but not all.
We have a show tomorrow at the dealership. so that will be fun.
I have short videos of us if you want to see them?
