No day off here for me, but no school makes getting anywhere a lot quicker. It seems like there is a school every 1/2 mile down here and each one has a 1/4 mile, strictly enforced 15 mph school zone. At fines ranging from $105.50 to $555.50, I'd bet that school zone infractions account for $50,000/day in revenue for the county.

About half a mug so far here too.The wife and granddaughter are heading out to the Florida Renaissance Festival in an hour or so and I'm taking the day off. I might put on a few miles, but mostly, I need a day of nothing to do. The 3 of us went to the Festival yesterday, all in period clothing. Because the 15 year old granddaughter was with us, we took the car, but usually we take the bike. We do get some looks then, Sam in all her queenly finery and me in balloon sleeves, knee high boots, gold embroidered vest with a sword on my back.

There's usually 150 or so bikes so cops are expecting swords and battle axes. Anyone who's dressed strange, carrying an edge weapon gets a pass for the month the festival runs.
They tie down swords and axes with tie wraps since the guy with the double bladed axe when off a few years back. He hacked a guy up pretty good.

All the good morning wishes failed me today. I got to my first job just before 10. I knew I was installing a softener in a codo so I was expecting trouble. I go in to look at the job, and the supply is 3/4" CPVC. I don't stock CPVC, so it's off to Home Depot for 40" of pipe and assorted fittings. I get everything I need and go to the check out where the corporate card is declined. I had $12 on me so I call the office. The service manager has left for a dentist appointment where she was to have 2 impacted wisdom teeth extracted. The yard boss (dumber that a shovel) is answering phones and the boss is out of the office. It took an hour and a half to get a credit authorization faxed over, I grab my stuff and head for the van. The rear right tire is going flat and the rim is 2" off the ground. I climb under the truck and try to remove the spare. The big wing nut that holds it up against the floor of the van is rusted solid. I beat on it with a 3 pounder for a while but it won't budge. I headed back to the job and put some air in the tire at a station. I got 40 lbs in it before the compressor times out. I had no more quarters, so I left for the job. The softener is going on a shelf above the washing machine to the left in a 3' x 8' laundry room and the shut off for the condo unit is above the dryer, but below the water heater on the opposite wall. I finally find the maintenance shop and ask which side of the shut off valve is street and which is house. He actually had the info and better yet he was right. Cutting on the wrong side would be big trouble in a condo unit if you know what I mean.
I moved the washer and dryer out to the dining room and go to work. I run my pipe down one wall across the back wall of the laundry room and use a hole saw to cut 2 holes for the pipe up through 2 plywood shelves. and finish plumbing up the softener.
Besides the resin that attracts the hardness from the water, a softener contains activated charcoal to remove chlorine taste. When you first run water through a new softener. you need to bleed off a hundred gallons or so to wash out the carbon dust. In a condo, that means you pull the strainer from the kitchen sink faucet or the tub and let the water run for 15 or 20 minutes until it runs clear. You get black spots all over everything so you need to spend another 10 minutes cleaning up the mess.
OK I get the sink and tub cleaned but the water flow to the kitchen sink is very bad. This particular faucet has a flow restrictor in the flex line that goes to the pull out spout. I climb under the sink and fix that. Good flow, but I've wasted another 20 minutes
I go back to the softener to hook up the salt tank and see a friggin LEAK. One drop/30 seconds, but still a leak. I cut out the bad fitting and repaired it. (Another half hour gone.)
What I had expected to see for my drain was in stead, some odd ball flex pipe that they use in mobile homes. It's real cheap crap that is hard to find fittings for so I can't hook up the drain.
By this time, it's almost 5 and I'm not going to be able to hit the plumbing supply house for fittings and I still have 2 or 3 hours of work so I pack up.
For the last hour or so, I've noticed a long forgotten aroma in the house. The owner's son, who is alone in the house ( maybe 23 or 24 years old) has been smoking some very potent herb and is now passed out in his bedroom. I finally wake him to tell him what's going on and he just can't comprehend what I'm saying.
I've now got 8 hours in a job that should take 3 (I get paid by the job) and I have to go back.
I head out to the truck and the rim is now barely an inch off the pavement. I nursed it to a gas station and changed a dollar after an argument with the idiot behind the counter and got 40 of the 60 lbs I need in it before the compressor timed out again.
I made it back to the yard but it ain't going nowhere by morning and I have a full day set up. Today, I hate my job!

Not all are horrible Kenny. At a single family home, the softener goes outside, next to the building and is usually pretty straight forward. I can easily do 2 jobs in a day and make a decent living.
I had a job last week that had an existing softener and I replaced it with a new unit in 45 minutes. $110 in my pocket.
The job I was on the last 2 days took me 13 hours and will pay about $250 with the carpentry and removal and reinstallation.
Well it's back for more punishment. It's sunny and 73 on the way to 85. It's supposed to be about 90 on Saturday. Summer's coming. Doing this stuff in Florida's summer heat can be brutal.

90 degrees? You could send some of that this way, we won't see temps like that until June.:HaHaHa: Hell, we may not break 60 degrees before the end of March!!!

Sam and I will go out on the deck and blow to the north west. Let me know when you smell garlic.
All in all a pretty decent day.

OK, it's Saturday. Do I call work and see if there's something going on, or do I ride? It's partly cloudy and 73 on the way to 89 with a 20% chance of rain, mostly east of I 95 along the coast. I might just take Horace Greeley's advice and "Go west, young man"

Mornin folks. It's 73, on the way to a high of 87, perhaps another record high temp for the date. Ft Lauderdale and Miami both hit 89 yesterday tying old records. Now were looking forward to Wednesday when it's not likely to make it out of the mid 60's. This may not sound like a big deal, but a 25 degree temperature swing in just a few days is very unusual here. The monthly average highs between January and July only differ by 14 degrees. (75.6 - 89.9) It was real foggy here at sunrise, but most of it has burned off and in about a half hour, I'm going to Miami for Cuban coffee.
Y'all have a great day!

Good afternoon...missed the AM opportunity to post here. Been busy in the kitchen and time just flew on by. Grungy overcast here on the cost with a lot of dampness making it a good day to stay in the house and do something constructive....well, maybe not.

Before heading out, I checked the weather radar and decided I would be better off heading north. I took the coastal road up to Palm Beach and stopped by this house on North Ocean Blvd. I couldn't convince the security guard that the owner was expecting me, but I did walk around to the beach and snap this shot of the house from the beach.
Only 44 million, if you're looking for a new house.

That's Rush Limbaugh's house. Actually it's one of half a dozen or so buildings on the property. I was about 100 yards from the house when I took the shot and the streeet is another 150 yards beyond the back of the house The main house must be 35,000 square feet or better. Here's a satellite shot of the property. From the street to the beach, it's all his.
I took the shot above from the red X
