Sorry to have to go here but this is how it goes.
8/2008 my wife will be losing her job of 30 years. No I am not begging as I can pay my bills without her income but her income is the savings/play money
HDB as well as all of my web ventures are a hobby and I have never and I am not trying to make a buck. BUT and we all hate the butts.
To keep this site as well as the others I MUST break even. So simply said
We moved to a new server this week thanks to my/our friend Chopper at bikershangout/megapowerhosting and cut my cost from 130.00 per month to 55.00 per month.
So I have done my part as best I can to cut cost and not lose the hobby I love.
Simply said HDB has to get an average of 15.00 per month in donations/sponsors or We may have to close the door.
Sorry but the boss has spoken and I have until 8/08 to have a plan in place.
any ideas?
Mike

That is an option and we will sell space if I/We can find someone interested in some cheap space.
Thanks, Mike

Thanks Wayne, I know your doing all you can. I hope we can keep pressing for more when it comes to member donations and the like. I know Mike doesn't want to make it a pay as you go type of site, the lesser number of admins the better.

Here's my math:
I counted 41 users who have been active in the last 24 hours. There are many more members than that, but those have logged on in the last day.
I run several web sites as a hobby also. I have one for my family, and a couple of others. They don't generate near the amount of activity or traffic that this one does, but I can tell you it is very time consuming. Mike's not charging for his time, he just needs to recover the expenses he has paid out of his own pocket until now. Mike says he needs $15/month to keep the place going. $15 X 12 months = $180. If just those 41 users pony up $5 that's $205, more than enough to keep Mike busy making avatars disappear. I am sure he has quite a cache by now. Of course, he could just start selling all those cool avatars, but that's not the point.
5 bucks people! Only 5 dollars for a YEAR! If y'all can afford a computer and internet access, you can afford 5 bucks a year to enjoy a great place with great people. This really is one of the best forums, because there are not a lot of members talking about crap I don't care about, and there are no ads. I personally hate ads. They are everywhere.
I have already donated long before this crisis developed, so yes I put my money where my mouth (or keyboard) is. I hope you all do the same. Mike can use any leftover to buy us all a beer at Horn Lake (Whenever that is).
Break open the checkbook, paypal account, credit card or whatever, just do it. Everyone needs to donate at least 5 bucks. Let's keep the place open and ad-free.

Well said txhawg. Mike and I talked earlier tonight and I was going to make a post very similar to the one you made.
That being said I will address all members of the site.
We are not asking for this site to make money, all we are looking for is the members that care to donate what is takes to keep the site running, 15 to 20bucks per month. All funds will be kept in an account for HDB and the totals will be made public for all members to see. Anything over and above the costs of site maintenance will be used for gatherings or other member related activities including helping members in need.
Members who donate will be listed in the donation box. If you wish to donate anonymously contact Mike or myself. There is a Donation button on the home page upper left corner that will accept paypal etc.
Please help keep our/your site clean and functional....

Sorry Wayne, I didn't mean it too sound like that. What I was referring to was some, and the word is "some", folks that pay to a forum site sometimes feel that since they pay to keep the site going, they feel they should have input into how the site is run.
I agree with you on the fact that I want this site to be around as well. I've met and rode with quite a few people from here, including yourself, and feel that as I travel there are a number of you I could count on in times of trouble or having a tour director when I get in the area. I know I will do the same if someone were in my area and needed help or a bed for a night if they are traveling through. Hell, I'll even throw in for a meal or two if you'll come visit.
