View Full Version : Red Light Cameras & Cellphones
Cellphone usage and stupid drivers come up frequently in motorcycle forum discussions…here is a verifiable stat from middle Kaliforny….
This may not work as I think you have to register to read an article (free registration, but a PIA)
http://www.bakersfield.com/hourly_news/story/359284.html
Interesting stat…clip from article…
"When you are dealing with people and all that comes with them (inattention, cell phones, distractions, poor driving skills, and all the other unpredictable things) it's hard to come up with concrete reasons."
But when it comes to why people run right lights, he has one reason.
"It's inattention, is what it is," Moore said. "Totally inattention."
He said he asked for an examination of 100 random photos from the red-light cameras. On 39, he said, the driver was visibly talking on a cell phone.
*********
39 gawd damn percent were visibly, actively running their mouths on a cellphone….
Put the damn phone down and drive...

Interesting reading. I can't figure out why broadsides go down but rear enders go up with a camera and vice versa without a camera.

For sure.

More people stopping for yellow lights instead of hitting the gas and blowing the red, the cellphone users behind them not paying attention...I always ride a lane line when I am coming to a red light camera intersection...maybe the jerk will miss me as they slide into the intersection or blow the light...if I get hit, hopefully a glancing blow instead of becoming the gooey center of the Oreo...
I was interested in the fact that intersections close to red light camera locations did not increase accident rates...my unscientific observation is those red light runners that stop for a camera intersection, then drive like hell to make up the 2 minutes they lost cuz they had to stop or get a cite in the mail...seems they blast off camera intersection and blow through the next un-camera intersection...(maybe it is just AH Kaliforny drivers....)
But at least we now have photographic proof that 39% of Kaliforny Drivers have cranial-rectum disease....

5400 caught at camera intersections. I wonder how many more didn't get caught otherwise. Ron, what is the average fine for this?

I seem to remember a certain cell phone talker who was almost chased down and beaten to a pulp one day. You settled for some quiet at-the-top-of-your-lungs your explanation of how to properly stay in their lane. Then there was that time on the way to Hot Springs that I had to teach those chinese morons how to speak english in a whole new way. Ok, so maybe the words they learned won't get you served at a McDonalds, but I felt better. :Waving:

Now Mr. Daniel, you're telling tales out of school. . . y'all know I'm a shy, laid back, calm, centered and serene lady when I ride. . . :Angel_anim:
You mean our own Ms_T lives up to the second half of her aka....
Daryl, as I recall the fine is in the $400 range...not chump-change by any stretch of political BS...the city is certainly using them to pad the coffers...

So, when I pass through Seminole on the way to Artesia, I can expect some of them?
<Maybe I better look at a map before I make this statement.>

some say magnets work, some dont. if you want to get technical, you dont NEED a law passed to run them. if you pulled up to a red light in your car and it NEVER changed, what would you do?

Run it, plain and simple.
South Carolina recently enacted a law that says if you're on a motorcycle and the light fails to change, after sitting through two cycles you can proceed through the intersection after checking that traffic is clear - BUT, if you get broadsided by cross traffic, it's YOUR fault. As it should be, I think.
I've lost count of the number of times I've "run" red lights that didn't change. Even did it once in front of a trooper, who saw me sitting there and just smiled at me as I rode by.

We have 2 "not motorcycle friendly" left turn lanes close by. I try not to be the first one there, because cars behind me are stuck. I usually don't wait the required 2 cycles. Enough of us have 'pitched a bitch' at the local Police station that they know.
I've run it when it was red, and had a car or two follow me!

BTT.
Just rethinking this as riding season comes upon us.

We don't have too many of the cameras here, but the cell-phoners are becoming a real nuisance. Had a car in front of me on I-10 this AM doing about 50. Finally got the chance to change lanes and pass here, and sure enough, she was yakking into a cell phone. Nor sure if she understood the continuous sound of the horn honking or me screaming at her to hang up the damned phone and drive, but (thanks to cruise control) I'm sure the Hawaian Good Luck sign was clearly understood by her. Wish she would have pulled off at the next exit where there is a 100% chance she would have caught the red light behind a few cars. I'd love to have taught her some good Coonass verbiage.

I passed a fellow on 190 between Killeen and Temple reading a book as he drove somewhat erratically in the left lane.
We have the red light cameras around Columbus. I'm all for them. In a town about 40 miles east of here the people took it to court claiming something stupid like "personal invasion of privacy" and WON. They also claimed the city wasn't doing it to control traffic but to "raise money." Unbelievable, the city had to take them all down.

I think I'm going get my wife on the back of my bike with a video camera to record some of these emmer effers in the act. I'll make sure she gets the plate number too.
WI has a texting-while-driving law that has probably has netted less than 10 tickets statewide so far...too difficult to enforce.

So far we just have a no-cellphone usage in a school zone. They've actually been writing tickets.
