Didn't that speed limit sign say 30mph? Okay, that's cool. Crazy and insane, but cool.

And just think, there's somebody following him, doing the same things and filming as he goes.

That guy doing the filming was doing a bit of dragging the boards in those turns. Both of them definitely have to know that road to take the turns that fast without ending up in the trees.

I think one of the comments posted out to the side of the video said something about him making that ride over 100 times in 24 hours. . . Yup, I'd say he's done it a time or two.

I have made the run 8 times or more on an Ultra.....whatever the speed limit sign says, I do. That is a road not to be takenb lightly.....but it is one helluva ride.

Impressive riding skills......

The Tail of the Dragon, Deals Gap and the Cherohala Skyway are some awesome roads to ride. They are a day trip from here and the riding up there is a pure adrenaline rush. If anyone feels the need to go there make plans to ride during the week and not on the weekend due to heavy sport bike/sports car traffic. We went last May on Sunday and about got our clocks cleaned by a Honda Civic!!!!!!

Good point, Greg. I have been there on both weekdays and weekends, and mid-week is definitely a better time to increase your chances of not having to change your pants at the end of the ride. But that little stretch of highway is definitely the coolest ride in motorcycleland.
For whatever it's worth: last time I rode it (2 years ago now) on the west side as we began to hit the twisties, I was passed by a red BMW rocket ridden by a Red leathered rocketeer. I found said bike and biker in the ditch less than 200 yards later. SHE was shaken but not stirred. Helped her up until her husband showed up (dammit), and then I made it to the NC side where as I was enjoying a stretch of the legs, I encountered a gentleman from just north of New Orleans who had wiped out and was in obvious distress. Damned medic instincts kicked in for me, and he turned out to have a broken collar bone from his attempts to break the land speed record on the Dragon. This was on a Wednesday in October. It can be a challenging 11 miles, and if you don't pay attention, you can be carried out on a stretcher. If you don't get stupid, it is the greatest 11 mile run in the country.

Stupid man on a goldwing doing the tail at that rate of speed on a open road! O.k so when he comes around one of the many 320deg. corners and theres a semi stuck and stopped then what? Or when theres a large RV cutting into his lane to make the corner? Just stupid to do on a open road. That shit is made for a closed course! They close the dragon a couple times a years just for shit like that. I'm sorry but we ride the dragon as often as possible and it's people like that, that make it unfun for us slower folks. Pushing that much weight over on those tires, once down on the frame you have lost control too. Then it's always some one looses!

Well now I personally think theres a few other ones near by that either are equal or even better then the dragon. In N.C. try CR1310 or S.Hwy28 South of 19/74 going to Franklin. Both are highly challenging!

02-10-2008, 10:37 AM
I've done the run to Franklin. Also the road from Waynseville to Hot Springs (NC) has some places in it to test your skills. Then there is the stretch of NC 215 from where it crosses BRP to just south of Waynesvilles that really gets your attention.

All valid points, indeed.

I was torn between between thinking his dumb ass needs to go to jail, and admiring the skill and balls it takes to ride a machine as big as that, as hard as that...

Well I was riding on a drill team for a local dealership and realise just how hard you can push these dressers and what happens when you do so just a little to much. NOT GOOD mind you. They are heavy on the body!
So at those speeds hmm?

I guess it's normal to be slightly in awe of a guy who can toss 900 pounds of motorcycle through a road like that and survive., I doubt I could, but then I consider myself sane. (Yeah I know, that's up for debate.)
Given the number of other vehicles on that road, he WAS a danger to himself if he tangled with anything that outweighed him AND to other bikes.

Very cool video though.

kd5cqt

If you listen (and you don;'t need to listen that carefully) you can hear the boards dragging in most of the turns on the camera bike. Any more lean than that on the Dragon, and you'd see some painful road rash get created.

Wow! That pretty much would make me want to take an alternate route. I have encountered maybe two trucks on the Dragon. Both had trouble negotiating the turns. I managed to get by both of them before they got into turns that could affect my well being. I have never been on the road when I haven't been buzzed by crotch rockets some of which will pass righ in the middle of a very sharp turn. Absolutely insane.

Agreed. You'll get no argument from me that what the riders are doing in the video is incredibly dangerous.

We spent two days of our motor school riding the road course at LVMS (Las Vegas Motor Speedway) at increasingly faster speeds. Once we all reached our personal limits, we watched our instructors make laps at speeds that seemed impossible.

My intent in posting the video was just that, a trained experienced rider can do amazing things with a 900# bike. I don't condone riding public roads at that speed, and while I do admire his skills, I don't admire him jeopardizing other folks on the road. I've always felt that if you want to kill yourself, it's fine with me. Just don't take anyone else with you...

:+1: I agree. As talented as those riders are, that kind of riding is for the closed courses.
