Sadly my grand father is gone. He was in the top gunner's bubble of a B24 in WWII and took down 2 ZERO's from what I recall.

I visit my father -in-law who is 84 on a regular basis. This unassuming kind man is blind, had a heart attack, a stroke and numerous ailments, but never complains, asks for, nor expects anything special.
Being in the Navy and a Vietnam Vet myself, we've talked about his experiences.
He served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Langley in WW II. He was involved in action in the Marshall Islands operations, her planes attacked Japanese positions in the central Pacific and western New Guinea, took part in the assault on the Marianas and in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Palaus Operation, raids on the Philippines, Formosa and the Ryukyus, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He was part of the Third Fleet's foray into the South China Sea, the first massed carrier attacks on the Japanese Home Islands and the invasion of Iwo Jima. More combat activity followed as Langley's planes again hit targets in Japan and supported the Okinawa operation.
Little does he know how much this country owes him, but never asks for any of it.
The GREAT GENERATION....the understatement of the 20th century.

My Father was also a turret gunner( Top) on a b-24. He flew 31 missions over Germany. He's 85 now.

I was thinking about Dad this weekend.
And now my son is heading to Afghanistan in a couple of months.
The circle just keeps turning.
