DALLAS -- A Plano Police Department motorcycle unit officer was killed Saturday in a collision involving his motorcycle and a car, Plano police said.

Police were dispatched at about 11 a.m. to the intersection of Independence Parkway and Russell Creek Drive, where they found Plano Officer Dayle Weston Hardy, 31, suffering from serious injuries incurred in the collision.

Hardy was transported by air to Baylor Hospital in Dallas. He was listed in critical condition and died of his injuries within about an hour.

The Plano Police Department is investigating how the collision occurred.

Hardy is survived by his wife and twin 3-year-old daughters.

The Plano Police Department said it has established a small memorial site in Hardy's memory at the Plano Police Substation located at 7501 Independence Parkway.

Hardy’s duty station was at the facility and his original motorcycle and picture are on display in front of this location, according to a release from the police department.

Individuals who wish to leave condolences, messages for the family, or flowers in memoriam of Hardy can also stop by the main Plano Police Station located at 909 14th St., officials said.

The Plano Police Department said the last time the department lost an officer in the line of duty was in 1920.

I was looking for some info online about a Plano motorcycle officer that was killed in a collision with a car over the weekend and came across this site. Apparently someone was at the collision site with a camera. There are some pretty graphic photographs here, so be warned.

By the looks of the pics the car ran a red while the officer had a green arrow? Or the officer thought he could make the turn before the car got there? Had his lights on? Just don't know...

Sad. Very sad.

It would be safe to say the cop had on his helmet, just goes to show a helmet ain't a save all safety item.
